Frequently Asked Questions

What is contra dance?

Contra Dance is an American folk community dance form that is energetic, social, and lots of fun.  All dances are pre-choreographed and taught to the group by a dance caller. Contra descended from English and Scottish country dancing and shares many moves with square dance, but it’s very much its own thing. There is no simple way to describe contra dancing – you have to come see for yourself!

What is the music like at a contra dance?

All our dances feature awesome local bands playing live! Contra music mostly comes from the Anglo-Celtic tradition; you might hear Irish, Scottish, French Canadian, and bluegrass tunes, or you might hear some more unusual selections if the band gets feisty. If you’re a musician and interested in playing at a dance, please get in touch with us.

Do I need a partner or can I come by myself?

No partner necessary! Most people dance with lots of different partners throughout the night. If you do come with someone, or with a group, we still encourage you to dance with as many different people as you can (though you should of course save a dance or two for the one who brought you).

Can my kids come?

Yes! Contra dance is a family activity, and even if your children are too young to dance in the line, they can still enjoy the music and hang out with you on the dance floor. Older kids can participate fully, and we offer special rates (see below) for dancers under 18.

How much does it cost?

$10 general admission; $5 for students, dancers under 18, and as needed otherwise. You can pay cash at the door or in advance at our EventBrite page.

What should I wear?

Contra dance is a workout! Wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind sweating in and athletic shoes or dance sneakers with soft soles. This is important both for your comfort and to protect the floor of our venue. Please make sure that your shoes are clean – no dirt, mud, or debris – before you enter.

I’ve never done any sort of dance before! Will I make a fool of myself? Will everyone point and laugh at me?

Absolutely not! Contra is for everyone. It’s an extremely accessible dance and even if you’ve never set foot on a dance floor, you’ll be swinging, do-si-doing, and allemanding left like a pro before you know it. Experienced dancers were all beginners once, and we are here to help you learn and have an amazing time.

Can I see what a dance looks like?

Sure! Here’s a video of us dancing in September 2024 to the music of the Stepping Stones and the calling of Katie Zanders.
